This interactive session describes strategies for providing a holistic approach to community building by university and housing authority personnel for multi-family affordable and public housing. Strategies to foster social cohesion can turn disconnected neighbors into a sustained community of care. Building on 30 years of partnership, the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee (HACM) and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Institute for Systems Change and Peacebuilding work to provide a systemic approach to cross-sector solutions with resident participation and partnership at its heart. Approaches to resident organization elections and resident leadership technical assistance, scaling community gardens and other wellness initiatives, and a checklist for Community-Campus Partnerships for Housing will be presented.
