This Is the Moment We Are Made For

A Message from NAHRO President George Guy

Dear NAHRO Family,

This is a challenging moment, and we are rising to meet it. Amid an historical affordable housing crisis, every day we help millions of families, seniors, children, veterans, and people with disabilities find and keep their homes. It is essential work and why, it is important that we are prepared to meet the moment.

Meeting the moment means speaking up for the tools we use: the Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher programs, the Low Income Housing Tax Credit, the Community Development Block Grants, and other resources that enable us to house people in thriving communities

That is why, right now, showing up and meeting these moments matters.

Meeting the moment means using our voice with boldness and purpose.

Earlier this year, we stood firm against a federal proposal to slash more than 40% from Public Housing, Housing Choice Voucher Programs, and more. These are the very programs that keep our communities thriving and allow us to extend the resources we provide. This week, NAHRO’s own Eric Oberdorfer will testify before Congress to defend and elevate the HOME Investment Partnerships Program. On July 28th, we are launching our August Advocacy campaign rooted in our call to action. This is a collective declaration that safe, affordable housing is not a luxury. It is a human right. We need your voice. Let your leaders know: we are not invisible, and neither are the communities we serve. This is how we honor our mission. This is how we ensure that housing remains not a privilege for the few, but a right for all. I urge you to prepare, participate, and make your voice heard. Our collective advocacy is one of our most powerful tools.

Meeting the moment means we must think beyond our borders and build alliances stretching across sectors.

During the past year and a half, we talked about in recent months, NAHRO has shared space and knowledge with housing leaders from Europe, Japan, and Africa. We exchanged ideas, best practices, and shared our commitment to improving lives through equitable housing. We are part of a global community of change-makers, and what we learn from one another strengthens the solutions we bring to our communities. While the languages and systems may differ, the pulse of the work is the same. We are all working for neighborhood and community stability.

Meeting the moment means we must lead with knowledge and conviction.

Our communities depend on us being not just compassionate but also informed. I am grateful to our NAHRO team as they continue to provide essential updates on federal policy changes, including the expansion of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) and guidance on Emergency Housing Vouchers. This week, I am standing shoulder to shoulder with you at our Summer Symposium. Together, we are exploring bold strategies, unlocking innovative solutions, and fortifying our shared mission to build communities that are strong, inclusive, and thriving. During the Symposium, the NAHRO team will also unveil the 2025 edition of the Secure Homes, Strong Communities report. This flagship publication includes vital state-by-state data to help you strengthen your case, secure funding, and shape local policy.

If this is your first Symposium, it is highly encouraged that you attend the First-Time Attendees session. I anticipate meeting you and learning more about the work you do in your community. We are each part of a deeper mission, and we need your voice as we advocate for families.

Though the work we do is not easy, it is meaningful, vital, and impactful work. Now more than ever, our communities rely on leaders like you were driven by purpose, grounded in service, and ready to meet this moment with the optimism necessary to pursue opportunities that will advance the communities you serve.

We are choosing to build an ecosystem where security is foundational and permanent. One community, one conversation, one family at a time.
