Steering Through Turbulence

2025 has been busy so far: January’s OMB funding freeze, reports that several senior HUD officials are departing, that the Department of Governmental Efficiency (DOGE) is asking HUD staff to review contracts, and that HUD staff may be cut by as much as 50%. And of course, the Continuing Resolution (CR) that funds the government will expire on March 14.  

To navigate these turbulent times, we need clear sight, quick reflexes and steady hands on the wheel. Charting a successful path requires timely information, sharp analysis, and regular updates – and NAHRO has all of those for you.  

Last month, when the Office of Management and Budget surprised most everyone by freezing federal funding, we shared the news with you all quickly and accurately via email, social media and the NAHRO website. We listened to your concerns about the memo and about payment systems being inaccessible and brought them to the attention of our partners at HUD and on Capitol Hill. And as new challenges arise, we will continue to keep you informed and work on your behalf here in Washington D.C.  

Here are three ways you can help us help you:  

• Stay informed. Be sure that you and your staff are subscribed to NAHRO’s Direct News emails, follow our social network accounts on LinkedIn, Facebook, Threads, and BlueSky, and check our website often. That’s where we’ll post all our latest news and updates. If you subscribed to our Direct News emails but haven’t been receiving them, please email memberservices@nahro.org.  

• Keep us informed. Having problems accessing your funds? Unsure about how a new Executive Order or memo will impact your agency? Contact Tushar Gurjal at tgurjal@nahro.org.  

• Contact your elected officials! Your voices matter. We’ve added a letter to our Action Alert Center telling Congress to prevent unilateral cuts to HUD programs – please send the letter to your elected officials, and ask your family, friends and contacts to do the same.  

In addition, I hope you will come to our Washington Conference, join us for Capitol Hill Day, and personally tell your elected officials what they need to do.
