August Advocacy Week 3: Expand Affordable Housing and Revitalize Communities

HOME and the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) give communities flexible resources to build and preserve affordable housing, support homeownership, improve infrastructure, and respond to local needs. These programs also help leverage additional public and private investment needed to move affordable housing developments forward.

That’s why for Week 3 of August Advocacy, we’re urging Congress to provide $2 billion for HOME and $4.2 billion for CDBG in FY 2027. Send the Week 3 letter now!

Week 3 Side Quest: Protect Restore-Rebuild

Plus, send this week’s Side Quest letter on Restore-Rebuild, a housing production tool that helps PHAs use existing Faircloth authority to develop deeply affordable housing.

HUD began winding down Restore-Rebuild in May 2026 and stopped accepting new Notices of Anticipated RAD Rents (NARRs). NAHRO is urging Congress to ask HUD to reverse the wind-down, resume accepting new NARR requests, and preserve this important housing production tool.

Show Your Impact — Report Advocacy Engagements

As you schedule and host site visits and in-district meetings, be sure to report your Advocacy Engagements with photos (when appropriate).This helps NAHRO track advocates’ engagement with lawmakers nationally and highlight the amazing work we know you are doing every day!

Big or small, NAHRO wants to hear what you and your housing agency are doing to engage elected officials at the local, state and federal level. Examples include, but are definitely not limited to: talking about the importance of housing during an interview (newspaper, tv, radio, or podcast); testifying at a city council meeting; running a social media awareness campaign; and attending or hosting town halls, ribbon cuttings, or groundbreaking ceremonies.

Bring Housing Home This August

August Advocacy continues to build toward Week 4: Bring Housing Home Week — August 24-28 — when NAHRO will highlight in-district meetings, site visits, and local engagement.

Can’t meet during week 4? Advocates are still encouraged to meet with officials and staff whenever they can throughout August. Schedule your meetings and start planning site visits using NAHRO’s Advocacy Hub and be sure to report your Advocacy Engagements with photos!

Keep Spreading the Word

Everyone can participate in August Advocacy. Send a letter, request a meeting, invite officials to visit a property, record a short video, engage local media, and/or bring together local leaders to highlight what housing and community development programs make possible.
