August 10, 2026 — On July 20, NAHRO and 81 other organizations submitted a joint letter in response to HUD’s Build America, Buy America (BABA) Request for Information (RFI). In 2024, HUD put out a similar RFI targeted to the housing industry more broadly. However, this current RFI specifically asked for manufacturers and others with knowledge of domestic production to provide more detailed input about where frequently-purchased housing inputs are made domestically. The letter’s comments focused on reiterating the difficulties BABA creates for housing construction, maintenance, alteration, and repair and provides several practical improvements to BABA’s implementation, including suspending BABA requirements during this study and issuing updated information based upon its results.

This RFI is likely to yield useful insights into the status of domestic manufacturing. NAHRO will provide updates as soon as the results of this RFI are available. As always, NAHRO welcomes member anecdotes regarding BABA compliance and the waiver process.
