#HousersAtWork Stories

In 2020, NAHRO launched the #HousersAtWork campaign to recognize the work of member public housing agencies responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Celebrating stories from across the country, the campaign demonstrated the power of elevating the work of housers whose efforts improve the lives of millions of residents every day.

NAHRO has relaunched the #HousersAtWork website as an ongoing feature dedicated to sharing the stories of housing and community development agencies making a difference in communities nationwide. Through regular member spotlights, we will highlight innovative programs, successful partnerships, resident-focused initiatives, organizational achievements, and the people behind them.

Together, we are advancing a shared vision of thriving communities with affordable homes for all.

Community Innovation Award Winner Spotlight: Transforming Homelessness Response

Addressing homelessness requires more than isolated programs—it demands coordination, shared vision, and systems that work across communities. In Alabama’s Wiregrass region, Dothan Housing is helping to lead that kind of transformation.

By bringing the Southeast Alabama Coalition for the Homeless (SEACH) under its umbrella, Dothan Housing helped establish a HUD-recognized Continuum of Care and launch a regional 10-year strategic plan to end homelessness. Through this effort, the agency aligns federal resources – including Emergency Solutions Grants and Special Purpose Vouchers – with local partnerships to improve service delivery and expand access to stable housing. The result is a more coordinated regional approach that helps more individuals and families connect to housing and supportive services.

Initiatives like this are part of a broader federal framework designed to address homelessness through coordination and strategic investment. By promoting access to tools like special purpose vouchers and educating housing authorities on partnering with Continuum of Care networks, NAHRO helps housing authorities better align programs and deliver more coordinated, sustainable responses to homelessness.
